Abstract

Purpose

With the rapid change that has taken place with digitalization and data-driven approaches in supply chains, business environment become more competitive and reaching sustainability in supply chains become even more challenging. In order to manage supply chains properly, in terms of considering environmental, social and economic impacts, organizations need to deal with huge amount of data and improve organizations' data management skills. From this view, increased number of stakeholders and dynamic environment reveal the importance of data-driven technologies in sustainable supply chains. This complex structure results in new kind of risks caused by data-driven technologies. Therefore, the aim of the study to analyze potential risks related to data privacy, trust, data availability, information sharing and traceability, i.e. in sustainable supply chains.

Design/methodology/approach

A hybrid multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) model, which is the integration of step-wise weight assessment ratio analysis (SWARA) and TOmada de Decisao Interativa Multicriterio (TODIM) methods, is going to be used to prioritize potential risks and reveal the most critical sustainability dimension that is affected from these risks.

Findings

Results showed that economic dimension of the sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) is the most critical concept while evaluating risks caused by data-driven technologies. On the other hand, risk of data security, risk of data privacy and weakness of information technology systems and infrastructure are revealed as the most important risks that organizations should consider.

Originality/value

The contribution of the study is expected to guide policymakers and practitioners in terms of defining potential risks causes by data-driven technologies in sustainable supply chains. In future studies, solutions can be suggested based on these risks for achieving sustainability in all stages of the supply chain causes by data-driven technologies.

Abstract

The connectivity provided by full-service network carriers under the umbrella of airline alliances is increasingly challenged by the services of Middle Eastern airlines via their own hubs, and the rise of new passenger strategies like self-connectivity. While these two developments can potentially benefit consumers with more services and lower fares, the rise of Middle East carriers has been met with opposition by EU and US airlines that call for increased protectionism. In addition, only a few airports in the world actively support self-connections. In this context, this study aims to investigate (1) the markets in which Middle East carriers exert a stronger dominance in terms of the number of passenger connections, (2) whether EU, US, or Asian hubs provide a competitive quality of connectivity in terms of travel time, and (3) whether a significant potential for self-connections is hidden at major airports worldwide. To that end, several datasets of passenger bookings (MIDT), airline schedules, and minimum connecting times between 2012 and 2015 are combined in a connections-building methodology that delivers six market-specific airport connectivity indicators for our benchmarking exercise. Our findings show that although European and some Asian hubs have lost traffic in global markets, they remain competitive from a quality perspective. US hubs have maintained their market share and competitive position. Finally, we identify the airports and airlines with the highest potential to provide self-connecting travel options, which can become an attractive new source of revenue for the parties involved.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this study is to create a robust and simple collision avoidance approach based on quaternion algebra for vision-based pick and place applications in manufacturing industries, specifically for use with industrial robots and collaborative robots (cobots).

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, an approach based on quaternion algebra is developed to prevent any collision or breakdown during the movements of industrial robots or cobots in vision system included pick and place applications. The algorithm, integrated into the control system, checks for collisions before the robot moves its end effector to the target position during the process flow. In addition, a hand–eye calibration method is presented to easily calibrate the camera and define the geometric relationships between the camera and the robot coordinate systems.

Findings

This approach, specifically designed for vision-based robot/cobot applications, can be used by developers and robot integrator companies to significantly reduce application costs and the project timeline of the pick and place robotics system installation. Furthermore, the approach ensures a safe, robust and highly efficient application for robotics vision applications across all industries, making it an ideal solution for various industries.

Originality/value

The algorithm for this approach, which can be operated in a robot controller or a programmable logic controller, has been tested as real-time in vision-based robotics applications. It can be applied to both existing and new vision-based pick and place projects with industrial robots or collaborative robots with minimal effort, making it a cost-effective and efficient solution for various industries.

Abstract

Purpose – Disputes provide a way for children to negotiate how they stand in relationship to one another in the local peer group interaction (Goodwin, 1990, 2006). This study follows the everyday peer disputes and classroom negotiations of a peer group of 8-year-old to 12-year-old Turkish–English speaking (and Meskhetian Turkish–English–Russian speaking) children attending a Turkish Saturday School in the United States, where a monolingual Turkish norm is projected by the teachers, to see how these institutional language norms are used as a resource for the peers to conduct their everyday interactions.

Methodology/approach – This study combines methods of ethnography (data are drawn from a year-long ethnography which followed children's everyday language practices in two school settings) and talk-in-interaction, specifically Membership Categorization Analysis (Sacks, 1972, 1992).

Findings – Children draw upon the monolingual school norm of using Turkish only, and speaking Turkish correctly, by way of positioning themselves moment-to-moment during disputes with one another. Through repeated appeals to their teachers to relax the Turkish-only rule, they also collaboratively index “speaking English” as a positive category-bound activity (Cekaite & Evaldsson, 2008; Evaldsson, 2007), influencing the local moral order of the peer group.

Social implications/originality/value of chapter – The study provides a view of how children living in a transnational society orient to wider societal structures and “build the phenomenal and social worlds they inhabit” (Goodwin & Kyratzis, 2012) as part of their everyday disputes and negotiations with one another.

Introduction: Decision making is always based on several factors which may affect the possible outcomes, especially in financial markets. Instead of having many criteria which may be required for decision making, “Multiple Criteria Decision Making” (MCDM) models might be used as a tool to reduce all criteria into a single one.

Purpose: The aim of this study is to measure the financial performance of commercial banks listed on Borsa Istanbul (BIST) by the MCDM.

Method: To this end, data from 15 different financial ratios from 11 commercial banks were used between the periods of 2002 and 2018. Both TOPSIS and gray relational analysis (GRA) models were used, which are commonly used in the literature for detecting the financial performance of listed banks in BIST based on their consolidated financial statements.

Results: According to the TOPSIS method, while the best bank is QNB Finansbank, HALKB, a public bank, was determined as the best bank using the GRA method. There is no significant correlation between financial performance indicators and market returns obtained by either method, with exceptions. There is no generally significant correlation detected between financial ratios and market returns. Accordingly, it is concluded that the bank stock prices in the study are shaped by the influence of external factors and expectations. The study results include information that can be used for different purposes among bank managers, academics and financial investors.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to introduce a simple hand-eye calibration method that can be easily applied with different objective functions.

Design/methodology/approach

The hand-eye calibration is solved by using the closed form absolute orientation equations. Instead of processing all samples together, the proposed method goes through all minimal solution sets. Final result is chosen after evaluating the solution set for arbitrary objectives. In this stage, outliers can be excluded optionally if more accuracy is desired.

Findings

The proposed method is very flexible and gives more accurate and convenient results than the existing solutions. The mathematical error expression defined by the calibration equations may not be valid in practice, where especially systematic distortions are present. It is shown in the simulations that the solution which results the least mathematical error in systems may have incorrect, incompatible results in the presence of practical demands.

Research limitations/implications

The performance of the calibration performed with the proposed method is compared with the reference methods in the literature. When the back-projection error is benchmarked, which corresponds to the point repeatability, the proposed approach is considered as the most successful method among all others. Due to its robustness, it is decided to make tooling-sensor calibrations by the recommended method, in the robotic non-destructive testing station in Ford-OTOSAN Kocaeli Plant Body Shop Department.

Originality/value

Arranging the well-known AX = XB calibration equation in quaternion representation as Q_A = Q_x × Q_B × Q_x reveals another common spatial rotation equation. In this way, absolute orientation solution satisfies the hand-eye calibration equations. The proposed solution is not presented in the literature as a standalone hand-eye calibration method, although some researchers drop a hint to the relative formulations.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to develop a conceptual model to examine the impact of four organizational factors (expatriate managers, stakeholder engagement, corporate social mission and demand management) on the social response activities and their subsequent effect on corporate social performance among subsidiaries of multinational enterprises (MNEs) in Tunisia, characterized as a small African economy.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses data collected from 115 subsidiaries established in an African country – Tunisia. It also applies a partial least square regression to test the hypotheses proposed in a comprehensive framework.

Findings

This study reveals that each of these factors, with the exception of expatriate managers, is found to positively influence the adoption of social response activities by MNE’s subsidiaries. In addition, involvement in such activities is also important in enhancing social performance concerning employees and customers.

Originality/value

Despite years of encouragement from scholars and theorists, studies across Africa have generally shown no interest in corporate social response as a strategic process that safeguards the well-being of host society. This paper proposes a comprehensive model for identifying the antecedents and one consequence of corporate social response activities of MNE’s subsidiaries. Stakeholder theory is used as a theoretical lens to develop a corporate social response framework.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to propose an electronic waste collection and classification system to enhance social, environmental and economic sustainability by integrating data-driven technologies in emerging economies.

Design/methodology/approach

GM (1, 1) model under grey prediction is used in this study in order to estimate the trend of the amount of collected electronic waste in emerging economies.

Findings

It is revealed that the amount of collected electronic waste is increasing day by day, and within the framework of sustainability in the process of collecting and classification of electronic waste, digital technologies were found to be lacking. It has been determined that this deficiency, together with the increasing amount of electronic waste, has caused environmental, social and economic damage to emerging economies.

Originality/value

The main originality of this study is integrating electronic waste collection and classification processes with data-driven technologies and sustainability, which is a relatively new subject.

Abstract

Purpose

Nonlinear dynamic analyses are employed for seismic collapse risk evaluation of existing steel moment frame buildings. The standards, such as ASCE 41-17, often define collapse thresholds based on plastic deformations; however, the collapse process involves several factors, and plastic deformation is only one of them. An energy-based approach employs deformation and resistance responses simultaneously, so it can consider various factors such as excessive deformation, stiffness and resistance degradation, and low-cycle fatigue as cumulative damage for seismic assessment. In this paper, an efficient energy-based methodology is proposed to estimate the collapse threshold responses of steel moment frame buildings.

Design/methodology/approach

This methodology uses a new criterion based on the energy balance concept and computes the structural responses for different seismic hazard levels. Meanwhile, a pre-processing phase is introduced to find the records that lead to the collapse of buildings. Furthermore, the proposed methodology can detect failure-prone hinges with a straightforward probability-based definition.

Findings

The findings show that the proposed methodology can estimate reasonably accurate responses against the results of the past experiment on the collapse threshold. Based on past studies, ASCE 41-17 results differ from experimental results and are even overly conservative in some cases. The authors believe that the proposed methodology can improve it. In addition, the failure-prone hinges detected by the proposed methodology are similar to the predicted collapse mechanism of three mid-rise steel moment frame buildings.

Originality/value

In the proposed methodology, new definitions based on energy and probability are employed to find out the structural collapse threshold and failure-prone hinges. Also, comparing the proposed methodology results against the experimental outcomes shows that this methodology efficiently predicts the collapse threshold responses.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to present a novel method for industrial robot TCP (tool center point) calibration. The proposed method offers fully automated robot TCP calibration within a defined cycle time. The method is applicable for large-scale installations due to its zero cost for each robot.

Design/methodology/approach

Precise and expensive measuring equipment or specially designed reference devices are required for robot calibration. The calibration can be performed by using only one plane plate in this method, and the calibration procedure is defined step by step: the robot moves to the target plane position. Then, the TCP touches the plane and the actual robot configuration is recorded. Then robot moves back into position and the same step is repeated for a new sample. Alternatively, the robot can be stationary and the plane can be moved towards the robot TCP. TCP is calculated by processing the difference of the contact points recorded at different positions. The process is fully automated. No special equipment is used. The calculations are very simple, and the robot controller can easily be realized.

Findings

The conventional manual robot TCP calibration process takes about 15 min and takes more time in case of the high accuracy. The proposed method reduces this time to less than 3 min without operator support. Practical tests have shown that TCP calibration can be performed with 0.1-0.6 mm of accuracy. This solution is an automated process and does not require special installation and it also has approximately zero cost. For this reason, this study recommends using the proposed solution widely in areas where even one or hundreds of robots are located.

Research limitations/implications

In this study, the data were directly taken from the robot controller without using any special measuring equipment. The industrial robot used in the tests has no absolute calibration. The classical “four-point method” was used for reference TCP data. It is the initial acceptance that this process conducted with extreme care and by using a needle-tipped tool will not produce exact values. It was observed that deviation of the TCP from a fixed point in reorient motions was not more than 0.5 mm. This method has been validated for different bits. The pilot works for different robot applications in Ford Otosan Gölcük Plant have been completed and dissemination has started.

Originality/value

Although the approach uses is clear and simple, it is surprising that the calculation of TCP using plane equations has so far not been mentioned in the literature. The disadvantage of using either fixed point or sphere as a reference is that the TCP cannot automatically guide to the target. This problem was overcome with the use of a larger target plane plate and the process was fully automated. The proposed method can be widely used in practical applications.
